Daugherty, Robrock named to Academic All-State lists

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) announced their Academic All-State lists for boys and girls basketball on Tuesday, with Huntington North being represented on each list.

Huntington North boys basketball senior guard Zach Daugherty and Huntington North girls basketball senior forward Madalyn Robrock both earned spots on the IBCA’s respective Honorable Mention Academic All-State lists.

According to the IBCA, 39 boys and 37 girls were named to the IBCA’s First Team Academic All-State lists. The IBCA also named an additional 203 boys and 179 girls to the Honorable Mention lists.

According to the IBCA, the Academic All-State program values both academic and on-court success, with both factors being taken into consideration for the selections. Student-athletes’ grade-point average, college board scores and academic class rank are all examined for the academic aspect, while statistics like points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game factor into the on-court portion of the consideration.

“The quality of these student-athletes shows that success in academics and success in athletics are not separate entities,” said IBCA Executive Director Steve Witty in a press release.

“Rather, in many cases, a player’s success in the classroom directly contributes to his or her success on the floor.”

According to the IBCA, in order for IBCA-member head coaches within Indiana to nominate a student-athlete, the individual must hold senior academic status, possess at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, a class rank in the upper 25 percent within their class and either an SAT score of 1,100 on the reading and math sections or a 24 or higher on the ACT.

Upon nominations being submitted, an IBCA committee examines the information received to construct the list of honorees.

Award winners will receive certificates for their selection later this spring.

According to the IBCA, the IBCA has selected an Academic All-State team for boys since 1973 and added the girls Academic All-State team in 1980.
