Vikings open outdoor season against Homestead

The Huntington North boys track team began their outdoor season on Tuesday evening, hosting Homestead at Kriegbaum Field.

Homestead ultimately claimed a 76–56 victory in the meet.

Huntington North won seven of the 16 total events at the meet, compliments of four individual track events, one team relay track event and two individual field events.

Junior Nate Burns scored a win in the 300 Meter Hurdles by clocking in with a triumphant time of 40.9 seconds, which was 3.7 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. The time, which converts to a 41.04 automatic time, placed sixth all-time on the Huntington North 300 Meter Hurdles leaderboard.

Senior Nolan Hughes took home the title in the 400 Meter Dash, besting the field with a time of 55.5 seconds.

Senior Brock Spahr claimed the 800 Meter Dash with a winning time of 2:04.9. Spahr’s time was 2.7 seconds ahead of junior Cody McCune, who finished second in the event with a time of 2:07.6.

Senior Drew Davis dismantled the competition in the 3,200 Meter Run by cruising to a 10:27.3 time, well over one minute faster than the next-closest runner.

The Vikings scored their lone relay victory in the 4x100 Meter Relay. The Huntington North quartet of Burns, senior Ricky Haught, freshman Micah Beal and senior Drew Nash crossed the finish line with a time of 46.9 seconds, which was 1.5 seconds faster than Homestead’s team.

In the field events, senior Max Hughes posted a winning distance of 36 feet and nine inches in the shot put to claim the event by over three feet.

Hughes also won the discus throw with a launch of 112 feet and 10 inches, besting the second-place finisher by over eight feet.

In the junior varsity meet, the Spartans earned a 70–15 win.

Up next for the Vikings will be a co-ed meet against Muncie Central on April 5 at Kriegbaum Field. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Haught will compete for Huntington North in the long jump at the Hoosier State Relays Large School Division on Saturday. The meet will be held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and is set to begin at 10 a.m.
