Huntington North set for Semifinals matchup with South Side

The Huntington North baseball team punched their ticket to the Sectional Semifinals with an 8–2 Sectional Quarterfinal victory over Wayne on Wednesday night at Forest Glen Park on Huntington University’s campus.

With the win, the Vikings earned a Friday night matchup against South Side, who drew a Quarterfinal bye in the tournament.

Huntington North enters Friday sporting a 13–11 overall season record, while the Archers enter postseason play with a 2–13 record according to MaxPreps.

The Vikings have found their groove of late, as Wednesday’s win was their fifth victory in a row.

“The single difference has been our senior leadership has really stepped up to direct and lead this team,” said head coach Jarod Hammel. “I’ve taken almost a backseat role and just facilitated and offered things here or there. The seniors have stepped up and taken this run upon themselves and hopefully we can ride it as long as they will carry us.”

South Side last played on May 16 in a 6–2 road loss to Northrop to wrap up the Archers’ regular season.

In total, South Side has piled up just 43 runs this season according to MaxPreps.

The Vikings and Archers have not faced off this year, but have played five common opponents throughout the season: Homestead, New Haven, Northrop, North Side and Wayne.

In Huntington North’s duels with common opponents, the Vikings have accumulated a 3–2 record, having faced each team once. South Side, meanwhile, holds a 1–6 record against the common foes, including two games against North Side and Wayne.

The Archers picked up one of their two total victories this season against Wayne on May 10 with a 6–3 decision.

First pitch for Friday’s Semifinal matchup is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Forest Glen Park. The winner will advance to Monday’s Sectional Championship duel against the winner of Friday’s other Semifinal game between Homestead and North Side.
