Huntington woman killed in collision

by James Ehle - jehle@h-ponline.com

A Huntington woman was killed on Thursday when her vehicle pulled out in front of a semi in Elkhart County.

Sharon R. Cuttriss, 29, of Huntington died at the scene when her 2012 Dodge Caravan pulled into the path of an oncoming semi at the intersection of US 6 and US 34, according to a crash report from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. The Freightliner collided with the driver’s side of the minivan.

According to witness reports, Cuttriss was attempting to turn westbound onto US 6 and was “creeping out into the intersection a little bit further each time” a vehicle passed the intersection.

The driver of the 1998 Freightliner, Bryan Culp, 61, of Wakarusa, Ind., told police he saw that the minivan was “in the intersection a little further than it probably should have been.”

Culp was headed eastbound on US 6 and began to slow down as he approached the intersection, but was unable to avoid the collision because there was another vehicle approaching from the westbound lane, according to the police report. Culp was uninjured in the collision.

All of the witnesses agreed Culp had attempted to avoid the collision but was too close to the minivan when Cuttriss attempted the turn.

The crash occurred at an intersection approximately one mile outside of Ligonier.

Cuttriss served as the Parks Program Director for the Huntington County Parks and Recreation Department since February of 2016.
