Huntington City Councilmember Jerry Meehan Jr. formally stepped down on Tuesday following a house fire that ultimately forced him to move out of his district.

After the fire in May, Meehan initially signed a six-month lease at a temporary residence in the district, but he and his wife are now moving to a new home outside the Third District. As city ordinances require council members to reside in the district they represent, Meehan would become ineligible to continue in his current seat. He said that the fire and its aftermath affected his family “immensely.”
